Architecture of Pessimism

John Hejduk: We are no longer in an age of optimism. We went through a period where there were only programs of optimism. Schools. Hospitals. Sunlight everywhere. Boundaries open up. Privacy was at a minimum. No bedrooms. No kitchens. Open space. No need to have privacy, because this was a very utopian, light-filled, optimistic view of the future. There wasn’t a counterforce culturally in the same way as we had in the Middle Ages where the programs of pessimism existed to off-balance programs of optimism. Now we are entering into an architecture of pessimism. I don’t take this as a negative condition at all. It’s simply a necessary psychic state. There has to be an equilibrium, a balancing in order for both lines to be running in a parallel and productive way again, like the Middle Ages, where a simultaneity of conditions will provoke certain arguments not presently possible.
